Here is a little report into the types of accidents that occur between motorists and cyclists.
It is the Ken Cross study from 1974. I know that is some time ago, but just read it through and you will see that the issues covered are pretty much the same as today.
One thing I note is that speed of the cyclist seems to be a factor in quite a few of the accidents, as does not looking properly by the cyclist.
Many accidents are the fault of the motorist, but it is better to be cautious than to be flat, and looking properly can help to reduce the effect of the errors made by others - is it better to be "in the right, and in the hospital", or is it better to be a bit cautious ....
As the owner of a slow bike, I have a good bit of time to look about :-)
